This band seems to reinvent itself every decade, and in the ’90s they were the cool rockers who made videos with hot ’90s actress Alicia Silverstone.  Her best friend in the car is the teenage daughter of the band’s lead singer.  The director cast her after seeing her in a Pantene commercial — he had no idea who her Dad was.  Apparently, niether did she for the longest time.  Her Mom had always told her it was Ted Nugent!  I guess when you’re living in the moment it’s easy to get those rock stars mixed up lol…

Today’s Retro Track Rewind was suggested by Samantha in East Stroudsburg.  She said it would make her day if I played it.  It’s a hit from the ’70s that became an even bigger hit in the ’90s when it was used in a classic scene in Wayne’s World, one of the funniest movies I’ve ever seen!  The movie’s producers didn’t think the song fit, but Mike Myers insisted.  To promote the soundtrack, Reprise Records cut a new video, intercutting excerpts from the movie with the original artist’s video.  Myers was horrified!  His exact quote was “They’ve just whizzed on a Picasso.”  He asked the record label to tell the band this video was not his idea, and to apologize for him.  The band replied with, “Thank you for using our song.”  Myers was quoted as saying, “Thank you for even letting me touch the hem of your garments!”  The video won the band an MTV VMA for “Best Video From A Film” in 1992, one year after their lead singer had passed away.  Click here to watch:

This Jamaican-American rapper caught a break when he recorded this song for the surprise hit movie How Stella Got Her Groove Back in 1998 with a pop superstar singing the hook.  He later went on to say that working with her was “the worst experience” and that she “didn’t want to be in the video or do any promotion.”  In fairness, it was probably her record label who made that decision, as they wouldn’t even give him the rights to use her on his album — he had to rerecord the song with a different female singer.  The stars of Stella – Angela Bassett, Whoopi Goldberg and Taye Diggs — were all in the video, however.  If you think Taye is yummy in Private Practice, you GOTTA see how tasty he looked 13 years ago.  Mmm mmm mmm.  Watch the video by clicking here:

So many people have asked me this that I felt I had to post a blog.  I’ll give you my top 5, and what’s more I’ll tell you why I like ‘em. 

#5:  Jennifer Lopez f/Pitbull “On The Floor”  What’s not to like?  It’s such an infectous dance jam!  Pitbull made the song for me — I heard a version without him and it just wasn’t as energetic.  The guy’s raps are HILARIOUS.  C’mon, “7 Tray Donk-A-Donk?”  That’s outstanding!  “Say no more, get on the floor.”  It’s no doubt “American Idol” brought J-Lo’s music career back from the brink.   When she sings “It’s a new generation of party people” she means it — she hasn’t had a real hit song since 2002!  As KRZ’s Music Director I’ve watched her struggle, releasing song after song trying to climb back on her throne.  Sony Music finally dropped her.  Then came “Idol” and a contract with the premier hip hop label Def Jam, and we’re all dancing with J-Lo again.  I can only wish her well!  Plus I love her because she has a big backside, proving you don’t have to be a Barbie Doll to top the Most Beautiful People list.  And she’s OLDER than me, yay! 

#4:  The Band Perry “If I Die Young“  I flat out bawled the first time I heard this song.  Went through a whole box of Kleenex.  “Lord make me a rainbow, I’ll shine down on my mother, she’ll know I’m safe with you when she stands beneath my colors.”  Probably NOT something a relatively new Mommy should be listening to!  (Oh geez I’m tearing up now just writing this.)   But because the song made me so emotional, I had to listen to it again and again.  It’s so well written, from the point of view of a young teenage girl (singer/songwriter Kimberly Perry is 28 years old) who’s passed on and is accepting of it (“what I never did is done/I’ve had just enough time”) and wants nothing more than to comfort her loved ones.  She does get one dig in — “Funny when you’re dead how people start listening.”   And the metaphor “the sharp knife of a short life” would have made my AP English teacher proud!  The Band Perry, consisting of Kimberly and her two brothers Reid and Neil, is musically very talented.  They transcend their country music genre much like Lady Antebellum, and I expect them to be around for a long time.

#3- Rihanna “S&M”  I like it like it come on!  Judging by the requests I get, so does everyone else.  Another infectous dance jam, about a naughty subject.  I waited and waited for the complaint calls from the Moral Majority, but they never came.  So that either means we all live in glass houses or we’re just dancing to the beat and not worrying about what she’s talking about.  One day my little Savannah is going to be old enough to ask me tough questions like, ”Mommy, what does S&M mean?”  I’m already preparing my answer.  It’s not easy.  I can’t be a hypocrit, I love music and its free expression.  SO how do I balance that as a mother, the keeper of my young daughter’s innocence?  This will be the subject of my next blog, stay tuned…  BTW, the Britney Spears remix?  I thought it was “OK.”  Not sure it was the best thing for Britney — you can really hear what a weak singer she is compared to Rihanna.  She does those sexy little “ow”s very well, however.

#2- The Black Eyed Peas “Just Can’t Get Enough”  I love how this is two songs in one.  It starts off with a very nice vocal from Fergie, followed by a sweet lovesick rap from Will-I-Am.  The instrumentation is electronic, chilled beats.  Then comes the “Switch Up” – when the tempo picks up and gets downright SINISTER.  One gets the feeling that something terrible has happened that separated this star-crossed couple.  “Afflicted/I need it/I’m missing you/I want your lovin right next to me and I can’t erase you outta my memory.”  The feeling is so desperate — something other than heartache has happened here.  Something dark, catastrophic… Hey I need to call up Lee Abrams and Steven Spielberg and talk about the possibilities here!

#1 Adele “Rolling In The Deep” I’m the crazy person you’re next to at the red light, belting out this song with my hands banging on the steering wheel.  “We could’ve had it aaaaaaaaaaaalllllllllll!”  Thank God my windows are up with the AC running so you don’t have to hear that!  But I can’t help it, this song makes me want to cry the blues.  It’s the best thing I’ve heard in a long, long time.  I don’t have her CD yet, but I’ve heard Adele “21″ has many great songs on it.  BTW, her CD is called “21″ because that is how old she was when she made it!  (She’s all of 22 now.)  She must be the reincarnation of some long gone Mississippi blueswoman from the 1930’s.  I have been this angry at a man before:  “Go ahead and sell me out and I’ll lay your sh** bare/see how I’ll leave with every piece of you/don’t underestimate the things that I will do.”  Hell hath no fury…

I wanted to pick just 12 to show the evolution of Savannah in her first year.  It ended up being 13 pictures, including the one taken at her first birthday party.  These had to be pictures I hadn’t posted before.  I wanted to show you what I’ve been up to while I’ve been completely slacking off on this blog over the past year!

It’s hard to believe this tiny 2-week old who could sleep on Daddy’s forearm grew into the relative giant she is today!   

1 Month old, June 2010

 She had bad baby acne for about 4 weeks!  I was really concerned and was told not to worry, it was normal for a newborn to be a little pizza-face.  And not to, under any cicumstances, put anything on it!  It did clear up, just in time for her to get cradle cap.  But that, thankfully, was only for a week.  Oatmeal shampoo and Aquaphor took care of that, in case you ever need to know.

2 Months Old, July 2010. First smile!

She’d had facial expressions before that might have been smiles, or might have just been gas.  This was, without a doubt, a real smile.  This is still the picture that pops up in my phone when I get a call from her daycare.

3 Months old, August 2010

 She got her first teeth at 3 months.  Here she is cutting them on her bunny rabbit, her first favorite toy.  Notice also the cute little chrome dome — my baby went bald, save for a little peach fuzz!

4 Months old, September 2010

Her first solid food was rice cereal at 4 months.  By then she already had her two front teeth!  This little girl won’t have a problem getting in her 3 squares — what an appetite!  Thank God she’s tall!

5 Months old, October 2010

 The October picture was taken at Hillside Farms where we spent a perfect afternoon visiting the animals.  The sling I’m carrying her in is called a Moby Wrap, and I highly recommend it. 

6 Months old, November 2010

My mother was taking care of Savannah that day, and changed her into the “Demon” onesie.  Better her than me!  The Demon was custom-painted on the onesie by my high school friend Kris, who is slightly left of center. 

7 Months old, December 2010

Savannah’s first Christmas was a social whirlwind, and she loved it — all that attention!  Her teenage cousin Nora wouldn’t put her down.  BTW the bib says, “I’m On The GOOD List.”

8 Months Old, January 2011

We celebrated Daddy’s birthday by taking off work and piling into the car for a trip out to Lake George, NY and a mini-vacation at the new Six Flags indoor waterpark.  Savannah had so much fun, she loves the water!  Daddy’s been taking her to swim classes at the Y since she was 6 months old.

I picked her up from daycare and one of the girls on the afternoon shift, Nadine, had put up her hair for me.  I had dropped off a baby that morning and picked up a little girl in the afternoon!  She’s going through a phase now where she’ll pull out anything you try to put in her hair, but this was fun while it lasted!

 And there goes the first year.  1 down, 17 to go, Daddy!  I can’t believe it.  She’s crawling all over the place, pulling herself up and cruising, standing on her own, even taking a few steps with help.  She climbs up — and sometimes down — stairs (one of us is always behind her.)  She pets her kitty cats and gets excited when she sees them.  She laughs and smiles — a lot.  She dances by bouncing her whole body to the beat.  She says Daddy, Mama and “that!”  (usually while pointing to whatever “that” is.)  She uses a sippy cup and is starting to feed herself with a spoon.  And she very much likes story time before bed. 

Sometimes I feel like she’s the only thing I did right.  And if that’s true, that would be OK with me.

"Born This Way" — Savannah Leigh models her new Baby Gaga onesie

HEY!  Do you have a little one who’d look cute in one of these?  The idea for these graphic onesies popped into my head when I first heard Lady Gaga’s “Born This Way.”  (EVERYTHING reminds me of my baby girl!)  SO I told my ideas to Gaga’s promotion rep and her people LOVED the idea.  Had a bunch printed up — in sizes 6, 12, 18 & 24 months (they run big, Savannah’s 11 months old and is wearing the 6 month size.)  I want to distribute these onesies to the members of my daughter’s generation — Generation Gaga!
